BAKER, La. (AP) - The Baker City Council has approved new sewer service rates to go into effect Jan. 20.
The new rates are a flat fee of $14 per month for residential users, including seniors, and $18 plus 30 cents per 1,000 gallons for commercial users.
City Attorney Ron Wall said Tuesday the old $3 flat rate for seniors was eliminated because it is illegal for the city to lose money providing services.
Mayor Harold Rideau says leaks are the cause for unusually high bills and will be corrected when reported to the public works department, which also deals with malfunctioning meters.
Rates since September 2011 for residential users have been $9 minimum and $12 minimum for commercial users.
