Avery Island is trying to become one of the nation's favorite tourist attractions but there are concerns about how to get to the top in the Reader's Digest competition.
The magazine visited Avery Island on March 9th, taking away some pictures from the Tabasco factory and left Iberia Parish with a little extra spending money.
"We received a thousand dollars." Fran Thibodeaux of the Iberia Parish Tourism Commission says, "our parish president has donated that to the tourism endowment fund."
Thibodeaux says it's part of the "We Hear You America" competition with Reader's Digest.
People from around the nation are asked to go online and cheer for their favorite tourist town. Avery Island is now in the top 30 on a list of over 400.
However, there is one problem... When registering, some people are entering their zip code instead of clicking on Avery Island. Those votes are lost to places like New Iberia- which wasn't even supposed to be on the list but now has more 200 votes.
"We need everyone in Acadiana to go out and cheer for Avery Island," Thibodeaux said.
"I think it's a fantastic thing for the area." Jack D'Aquin said of the competition. "(It's great) for New Iberia and Acadiana in general."
D'Aquin lives on Avery Island and he says if they win this competition, it can give the area a much needed tourism boost.
"Everybody's recovered from all the hurricanes and prospering after the oil spill." D'Aquin says, "this is a great area to visit."
Iberia Parish could win $40-thousand if Avery Island takes first place in this competition, but the parish still needs a lot more votes.
