LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - Authorities say a 44-year-old Moss Bluff man has been booked with theft after allegedly running a scam for a fundraiser dinner.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers tells the American Press Michael L. Derrick was arrested Tuesday after detectives discovered that he sold more than 75 tickets for dinners for a benefit event that did not exist.
Myers said Derrick collected approximately $800 from five local businesses.
She said an employee of a local business said Derrick allegedly solicited money for lunches he was selling to benefit a local cancer patient.
It was unclear whether Derrick has an attorney.
