KENNER, La. (AP) - The head of a citizen group has asked the state legislative auditor to investigate Kenner's dealings with the Kenner Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
The Times-Picayune reported that Walt Bennetti questions Kenner's involvement with the convention bureau in operating a 2009 festival. Money raised by the festival was used to buy backstops at several city playgrounds.
But the money was not deposited with City Hall. City officials instructed the convention bureau to write checks to vendors as Recreation Department purchasing decisions were made.
Mayor Mike Yenni terminated the city's contract with the convention bureau on Aug. 3 and asked police to investigate its spending practices. Yenni denied the city violated public bid laws in the handling of the backstops - as alleged by some officials in the tourism group.
