A state legislative audit report says four LSU-Eunice employees spent nearly $160,000 in school funds on clothes, electronics, and other personal items. The report, which was made public today, says the workers in the LSUE Office of Academic Assistance made 1,560 personal purchases between fiscal years 2008 and 2012.
The program's assistant director, Carra Sergeant, is accused of spending over $74,000 of the program's funds. The program's director, Dr. Marvette Thomas, is accused of spending over $68,000.
The four employees allegedly involved in the improper spending--Thomas, Sergeant, Shawana Prudhomme, and Judy Guillory--were charged in December with multiple counts of forgery and theft.
The audit states that the LSU System will implement training for supervisors and other controls to prevent unauthorized purchases from taking place. The audit also states that LSUE is working with federal officials to seek restitution.
