Audit accuses Basile asst. housing director of stealing money

An audit released today says the assistant director of the Basile Housing Authority misappropriated nearly $4,600 in funds in 2012.

According to an independent audit filed with the State Legislative Auditor's Office, the receipts for those funds led auditors to the assistant director of the authority, who was responsible for handling the funds.

The auditor noted that several rental registers were altered to cover up the removal of funds.

The audit continued by saying this trend continued into 2013, though some of the money had been replaced.

The auditor recommended that the housing authority's director and board notify local police and the Evangeline Parish District Attorney's Office about the alleged theft.

According to the audit, the executive director and the board chairperson agreed to allow the assistant director to keep her job provided she pay back the funds by June 30, 2014.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development's website, the Basile Housing Authority's executive director is Anisa Richardson. The board chairperson is Betty Richardson.

Calls to numbers listed for both Anisa Richardson and Betty Richardson went unanswered. Basile mayor Berline Sonnier was unavailable for comment, as were staff members in the HUD New Orleans Field Office.
