Attorneys to appeal ex-councilman's conviction

AMITE, La. (AP) - A Tangipahoa Parish judge gives five years on probation to a former Tangipahoa Parish councilman convicted on two counts of malfeasance in office.
The Advocate reports that Judge Bruce Bennett gave Petitto five years on each count, then suspended the sentence.
The case stems from Petitto's proposal and vote on a 2006 council resolution that helped his brother earn nearly $200,000 in a land deal.
Petitto waived his right to a trial by jury. Bennett convicted him in April. He says that, while on probation, Petitto cannot vote or seek public office.
Defense attorneys Ron Macaluso and Garrison Jordan of Hammond say they intend to appeal.
