MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) - The Atchafalaya River is already above
flood stage at Morgan city, raising worries about spring floods.
Mike Lowe of the Army Corps of Engineers' New Orleans District
says the corps has been in a flood fight since November. He says
that's very early.
The Atchafalaya River is at 5.3 feet at Morgan City - 1.3 feet
above flood stage.
That's well within the protection from floodwalls and levees.
But the spring thaw will add a lot more water from melted snow and
ice farther north.
Lowe says that could threaten the Ohio, Mississippi, Atchafalaya
and all waterways in their respective systems.
