The Evangeline Area Council Boy Scouts of America is hosting its second "Atchafalaya Basin Dedication" event on March 26th from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Atchafalaya Basin Welcome Center, I-10 exit 121, Butte La Rose. This year's event is a follow-up to last year's hugely successful event which involved 1,500 participants and the planting of 5,000 cypress trees near the Welcome Center site.
This year Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from across Acadiana will perform a service project to plant 10,000 trees on state property south of the Welcome Center. In addition to the reforestation efforts performed by the Scouts, an educational fair called the "Atchafalaya Basin Partners" will take place on the Welcome Center grounds to provide Scouts and volunteers with an opportunity to learn about environmental, recreational, and cultural topics focused on the Basin and Acadiana. 50+ organizations, individuals, businesses, and State Departments will be on hand to talk with the Scouts.
Other activities offered throughout the day include a performance by 2011 zydeco Grammy winner Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, swamp tours, canoeing, food, fun jumps, live alligators, and an opportunity to meet Mike and T-Mike Kliebert from the History Channel's "Swamp People." Anyone interested in participating can register online at www.eacbsa.org.
