AT LARGE: Alleged fraudster possibly scamming St. Martin and Iberia residents

St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office is asking to the public's help in locating a man who may be attempting to defraud residents of both St. Martin and Iberia Parishes.

Investigators with the SMPSO are seeking the whereabouts of Gregory Donnell Lewis, 27, of Libson, Louisiana. Lewis allegedly told St. Martin Parish residents that he was with SMILE Community Action Agency and would pay all of their bills for a few months. He is alleged to have further instructed them that in order for him to pay a resident's bills, the resident first would have to purchase a green dot prepaid Visa card from Wal-Mart and provide him with the pin number, at which point Lewis reportedly had disconnected his phone. He is also attempting the same scam to victims in Iberia Parish.

Deputies are warning potential victims to never provide any personal information to someone over the phone, and to never provide someone with either cash or credit cards in connection with scams such as this. The public is urged to always verify the employment of someone alleging to work for a specific agency.

A person who feels he or she may have been victimized by a scam should contact local law enforcement agency, the Better Business Bureau, and the actual agency to which the alleged fraudster claims to represent. Anyone knowing the location of Mr. Lewis is asked to contact the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office at (337) 394-3071.
