The Daily Advertiser is reporting Assistant District Attorney William T. Babin has filed papers to seek the death penalty against Landon Broussard, in the death of 3-year old Julian Madera. If Broussard's case goes to trial, he could be the first defendant to fight for his life before a Lafayette jury in decades.
Broussard is charged with first degree murder in the toddler's death. His girlfriend - Madera's mother - Laura Smith, is charged with second degree cruelty to a juvenile in the death of her son. In March, a Lafayette Grand Jury indicted both of them.
Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office investigators say the toddler suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head, face and neck. He also had a split lip, part of one ear was torn and there were also apparent traumatic injuries to the boy's privates.
