LAFAYETTE, La. - The ASO's Hubbell Chamber Music Series Finale will be held May 31 with guest artist, Shawn Roy, baritone and piano, playing alongside ASO Chamber musicians. "Paris 1922: All That Jazz" performance begins at 7:30 pm at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in downtown Lafayette. Limited seating remains available for purchase at www.acadianasymphony.org, the Acadiana Symphony Box Office, 412 Travis Street in the Oil Center, or by calling 337-232-4277 ext. 1. Tickets are $35.
"Paris 1922: All That Jazz" is dedicated to Pat and Celia Soper, long-time supporters of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra.
The repertoire consists of Darius Milhaud's Le Creation du Monde, Op. 81a, Cole Porter's Song Book, and Francis Poulenc's Le Bal Masque. Le Creation du Monde (The Creation of the World) was inspired by Milhaud's trip to the United States in 1922 when he heard "authentic" jazz for the first time on the streets of Harlem. Next, the audience will enjoy pieces written by Cole Porter, including songs from Fifty Million Frenchmen, a musical comedy that appeared on Broadway in 1929; I Love Paris from Can Can, a musical production about showgirls of the Montmartre dance halls during the 1890s; and the popular song, Let's Do It, from Porter's first Broadway success, the musical Paris. The evening will conclude with pieces from Le Bal Masque by Francis Poulenc, French composer and member of the acclaimed Parisian Jazz group, Les Six.
