Lafayette releases details of judging for Rand McNally's "Best of the Road" competition Earlier this month, Lafayette was named a finalist in Rand McNally's summer competition to find the best small towns in America. In May, over 20,000 people nominated more than 600 towns from across the country in five categories. Lafayette was selected as one of the top 6 in the "Best for Food" category and has moved on to the finals of the competition.
Late last week, the judges for the food category were announced. Calling themselves "The Fun Finders," Jim and Bonnie Parr are a retired couple from Florida who will visit Lafayette and five other cities while driving cross country.
The Parrs currently estimate their arrival in Lafayette to be around July 6th. Officials plan to feed the couple and convince them of Lafayette's food and fun superiority.
Members of the public are encouraged to make the Parrs feel welcome. The Parrs are on twitter (@theparrclowns) and messages can be posted on the Facebook page (The Fun Finders). Local businesses are encouraged to put signs on their marquees welcoming the couple. The winning towns will be announced on July 22 at the Destination Marketing Associations International conference in New Orleans. The winning towns will also be featured in the 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas as well as on the website bestoftheroad.com. In addition, they will be featured in USA Today.
Lafayette is the only city in Louisiana to be named a finalist in the competition.
