Arrest Made in Abbeville Motel Incident

An arrest has been made involving the situation at Abbeville's Sunbelt Lodge Motel earlier today. Abbeville Police responded to the motel for a complaint a gun was pulled on a woman. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the femals who said that two men went into her room and one of them put a gun to her head. The victim told police she wanted to leave the room but was not allowed. The victim stated that after a while, she was able to leave the room and went to the motel office and called 911.

APD officers then went to the room which was believed to be occupied by the suspects and another other female who was with the victim Officers were unable to make contact with anyone in the room and it was unknown if they were still there. Officers made several attempts to contact someone inside the room and then made entry. No one was found inside the room.

APD then began interviewing the victim and witnesses. A photo line-up was prepared with the suspect who put the gun to the victim's head. The victim identified Dereck Viator, 32 years old, of Lafayette as the subject who pulled the gun on her. Dereck Viator was later arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, False Imprisonment, Armed with a Dangerous Weapon and Illegal Carrying of a Firearm. Bond was set at $50,000.00 for the three charges combined. He was then transported to VPCC where he awaits bond.
