For 24-year-old Adam Doucet and a friend, a Wednesday night out downtown was far from over as they said their goodbyes.

"We were in the parking lot and standing against the car, saying goodnight and then all of a sudden I feel a 9 millimeter up against my head," Doucet said.

The pair were held up by two men in a parking lot off Jefferson Street around 1:00 a.m. Thursday. The suspects made off with a cell phone and cash and credit cards from a purse and wallet.

"Every time this year, we can see an increase in armed robberies as a result of people needing things or taking advantage of opportunities and people being out," said Corporal Paul Mouton with the Lafayette Police Department.

Cpl. Mouton says the downtown area is safe, but people should take some basic precautions. Some tips for keeping yourself safe include being aware of your surroundings, and parking in well-lit areas.
