BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana authorities have arrested an Arkansas man on charges he plotted to steal roughly $42,000 in timber.
The Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry says 51-year-old David Mallard, of Taylor, Ark., was booked Wednesday into a Webster Parish jail on five felony counts of timber theft.
Mallard, who was later freed on $25,000 bond, operated as Stateline Timber Services. He is accused of forging timber deeds from three Webster Parish landowners and selling the phony deeds to a timber company in Springhill, near the Arkansas line.
Investigators say the company didn't learn of the alleged scheme until after it paid Mallard and started cutting the timber tracts without the real owners' permission.
