Archbishop of Baghdad to visit Diocese of Lafayette

The Diocese of Lafayette welcomes Archbishop Jean Benjamin Sleiman, OCD Archbishop of Baghdad, Iraq. Archbishop Sleiman, a Carmelite priest, is the Latin Archbishop of Baghdad and head of the Latin Church Community in Iraq. He was ordained a priest in 1973 in Beirut and then earned doctorates in theology and anthropology. He was appointed as archbishop of
Baghdad in 2000.

He will be conducting the annual novena in honor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel at the Carmelite
Monastery from July 8th through July 16th at 6:00 p.m. each evening. The topic of the Novena
will be "Our Lady of Carmel, Mother of the Church". The Carmelite Monastery is located at 1250 Carmel Drive in Lafayette. All are invited to attend.

Archbishop Sleiman will be the celebrant at the 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, July 7th at the
Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette. This visit with the archbishop is an opportunity for the Catholics of Acadiana to learn more about the existence of the Roman Catholic Church in a Muslim country. All are invited to attend.

Archbishop will be the celebrant at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Grand Prairie on Sunday July
14th at 9:30 a.m.
