Near the shores of Lake Palourde in Morgan City, crews are working to give the Siracusaville levee more elevation. On the east side of the levee, members of the Army National Guard are working to install HESCO baskets, that will give the levee a few more feet of protection from the expected swelling of Lake Palourde.

Further west on the levee, a similar goal is being accomplished, but in this case, crews are using water to fight the floods. Abbeville company GulfRim Navigation has been contracted by the city to install an estimated 2,500 feet of Aqua Dam (left) along the levee. It's an innovative, but simple concept, that involves pumping water from a nearby canal up the levee into bladders that line the top of the levee. Once filled with water, the Aqua Dam creates a seal on top of the levee, and like the HESCO baskets, the Aqua Dam also gives a few more feet of protection from Lake Palourde.
