The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal has denied Brandon Scott Lavergne request for a new trial, the court said in an opinion released today.
The court did not give a reason for denying the request. In the appeal, Lavergne claimed he was coerced into a plea agreement that landed him in Angola State Penitentiary, where he is serving two life sentences. He pleaded guilty in August 2012 to the May 2012 murder of Mickey Shunick and 1999 murder of Lisa Pate.
Lavergned also argued that his indictments should be thrown out because there was too much press coverage in Lafayette Parish for a grand jury to be unbiased, and he claimed Lafayette Parish did not have the jurisdiction to indict Lavergne in the Pate murder.
