(St. Martinville, La.)- Yesterday morning at approximately 11:00 a.m., a resident in Parks called Animal Control to say that he observed a skunk in his front yard that appeared to be ill. When authorities arrived on scene, they located the skunk a short distance away from where it was originally sighted by the resident. The skunk was acting erratically and was stumbling as it attempted to walk. Due to the bizarre behavior being exhibited by the skunk, it was safely captured and subsequently tested for rabies. Tests came back shortly afterwards confirming that the skunk tested positive for rabies.
Authorities are urging residents to please call the Sheriff's Office at (337) 394-3071 to report any peculiar or out of the ordinary behavior that they may observe of animals in their area. Residents are being advised to not approach or attempt to capture or handle the animal. We would like to remind residents to please make sure that all pets and domestic livestock are up to date on all of their vaccinations.
