NEW ORLEANS (AP) - AmeriCorps has pulled two of its National Civilian Community Corps teams out of New Orleans following the slaying of one of its volunteers.
A spokeswoman for the group says the teams, one of which was working directly with 18-year-old Joseph Massenburg, were sent back Thursday to their home base in Vicksburg, Miss.
Samantha Warfield says the teams had been working with Habitat for Humanity and Green Light New Orleans. She says both were brought back for counseling after Massenburg was found shot to death in a New Orleans neighborhood Monday night.
The Times-Picayune reports the move affects about 18 people. Warfield says the group has slightly fewer than 900 other members still working in the city and plans to continue sending NCCC members to the city in the future.
