American Cancer Society Announces 2012 Spirit of Hope Award Recipients

The American Cancer Society has selected four community leaders as recipients of the 2012 American Cancer Society Spirit of Hope Award. The award recipients will be recognized at the American Cancer Society Black and White Gala, which will take place at the Acadiana Center for the Arts on Saturday, August 18, 2012.

The recipients are Diane Meaux Broussard and Steven "Ike" Sagrera of Abbeville and Linda Rose and Dr. Luis Meza of Lafayette.

· Diane Meaux Broussard currently serves as the Clerk of Court for Vermilion Parish. Diane has been an avid volunteer for the American Cancer Society and is a two-time cancer survivor. "After surviving breast cancer twice, at the age of 28 and again at the age of 42, she embarked on a personal fight against breast cancer and used this fight as an opportunity to help others facing the same challenge," says her nominator. Diane has been involved with the American Cancer Society for nearly two decades, serving on the Relay For Life of Vermilion Parish planning committee in various roles including event chair. "She has shown the depth of her caring and her spirit by driving many patients to meet with doctors or has taken them for treatment, she has brought countless casseroles or supper to many cancer patients, she has prayed with them, she has raised money for this cause, and more importantly, she gives them hope by being an example herself as a two-time survivor of breast cancer."
· Steven "Ike" Sagrera has served on the Relay For Life of Vermilion Parish planning committee for over 8 years. "He has given countless hours of hard work and dedication every year that he has been a part of Relay. Ike is legally blind and I have never seen him let this stop him in his efforts to make the event a very successful one. He has taken each event and made improvements each year and given it his all," says his nominator. Ike embodies the true meaning of the volunteer-driven organization that is the American Cancer Society.
· Linda Rose currently serves as the administrator for the Breast Center of Acadiana. Linda was nominated by a colleague who stated that she is "a shining light and advocate for patients faced with a diagnosis in our community. Linda continuously devotes her time & efforts to provide support and assistance to those diagnosed with breast cancer."
· Dr. Luis Meza recently retired from a long tenure as a medical oncologist and hematologist at the Cancer Center of Louisiana at Lafayette General Medical Center. Dr. Meza was a practicing physician for over 46 years and his nominator says that "he has never lost his passion. He is a very approachable doctor that many love and highly respect. He has a listening ear to the needs and concerns of his patients and their families. He welcomes all opportunities for achievement and advancement." Dr. Meza was previously awarded the Spirit of Hope Award, but with his recent retirement from a long and very distinguished career, we are excited to honor his achievements once again.

The American Cancer Society Black and White Gala is a premier black-tie event in Acadiana. The event honors individuals for their accomplishments in the fight against cancer through the Spirit of Hope Awards. The event is led by a volunteer committee of community leaders, led by Event Chair Amanda Bedgood, editor of Face Magazine, and Co-Chairs Jamie Blanchard with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and independent event planner Aimee Pawlowski.

"Here in Acadiana, funds raised by our event are making an impact on so many lives, said Bedgood. "From making possible the vital American Cancer Society programs and services that support those in our community facing a diagnosis, to life-changing cancer research and medical discovery, to advocacy for access to quality health care for everyone affected by cancer, the money raised through the Black and White Gala is helping further the vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays."
