Traffic is now flowing on a highly anticipated road in Lafayette. A portion of the Ambassador Caffery Extension opened at 2:00 this afternoon. The opening will alleviate traffic from highway 90 near the Zoo of Acadiana to LA-89. Both Lafayette and Broussard residents believe the new road will help traffic problems and local business. Bill Fontenot with the State Department of Transportion says " (the extension) opens up that property out there for the land use of economic development... and many parishes from the South will benefit going in and out of the area."
It took 2 years and $60M to construct the road. The complete extension should open in about 3 weeks. Transportation officials also say, in the event of an emergency, like a hurricane, the new route will also be key in evacuations toward I-10.
