On December 4, 2009, at approximately 2:30 am, officers with the Lafayette Police Department responded to the Shoprite, located at the 4000 block of West Congress Street, regarding a disturbance. The clerk advised the 911 operator that suspects appeared intoxicated and were knocking on the windows to be let in at the store. When officers arrived the alleged suspects had fled the scene. As the officer was completing his investigation he observed a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description traveling west on West Congress Street. The officer attempted to investigate, but the suspect vehicle entered a private lot and then accelerated north on Ambassador Caffery Parkway. The officer lost sight of the vehicle, but later drove upon a crash in the 1500 block of Ambassador Caffery Parkway.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect vehicle struck a southbound vehicle and engulfed into flames. The driver of the southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the southbound vehicle was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. At least one person is believed to have died in the northbound suspect vehicle. The Crash remains under investigation by the Lafayette Police Department Traffic Division.
