OBERLIN, La. (AP) - The Allen Parish Police Jury has voted to eliminate 10 road crew positions and cut funds to various agencies in a bid to save the parish more than $550,000 through 2010.
Jury President Sonny Weatherford said on Monday the cannot operate without a balanced budget.
Parish officials were hoping to get a $300,000 assist through Coushatta Tribe gaming proceeds meant for the sheriff's office, but tribal leaders refused. Sheriff Harold Brady brought up the possibility last week.
Jurors passed a motion to cut $85,951 from the rest of the 2009 budget and $469,457 from the 2010 budget.
Weatherford said two people from each road crew will be cut, saving just over $66,000 for the rest of 2009 and $354,000 for 2010.
