Around 1:12 a.m. Sunday, Opelousas Police Department received a call indicating that a black male had stolen money out of the register and several video poker cash tickets from a local convenience store on Creswell Lane.
When officers arrived on the scene, they located the alleged suspect, Steven Joseph Lavergne of Lake Charles, going over a nearby fence. Officers surrounded the area and werw able to bring in the K-9 named "Zig" after determining that the Lavergne was hiding under a portable building.
The K-9 officer then gave several commands for Lavergne to come out or he would deploy the K-9 named "Zig". Lavergne refused, and Zig was sent under to apprehend Lavergne.
Seconds later the suspect identified as Lavergne came out, escorted by Zig.
Lavergne was transported to OGH-ER by ambulance where he was treated for injuries on his left leg, released and jailed in the Opelousas Police Department jail.
Lavergne is charged with felony theft and resisting an officer. He will go before a magistrate Monday morning.
