The all-clear has been given in the area surrounding a Calcasieu Parish chemical plant where a fire broke out this afternoon.
According to state police and Calcasieu Parish OEP officials, the fire began around 1:45 p.m. at the Axiall plant in Westlake. They say the fire began in a unit containing hydrochloric acid and vinyl chloride. State police add that the unit may have held ethylene dichloride.
Officials say no one at the plant was injured and that all plant managers have accounted for all employees.
Two drivers in the area reported problems after driving through the smoke. Troopers say they have been transported to area hospitals for observation.
The fire and smoke caused officials to order a shelter-in-place for all of Westlake and parts of Sulphur and Moss Bluff. The inferno also caused officials to shut down I-10 through Lake Charles. Police have since lifted the shelter-in-place order and have reopened I-10.
Troopers say hazmat crews are also on the scene. Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire began.
