ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - The city of Alexandria is battling an ongoing illegal dumping issue.
Instead of discarding their garbage and trash the proper way -- by placing it on the street in front of their homes -- some people are placing that trash on abandoned properties.
Mayor Jacques Roy said there's a growing perception that the problem is people from outside the city coming into Alexandria and illegally dumping trash. While that's part of the problem, he said the issue isn't that simple. Not only do non-residents dump illegally, so do city residents.
Roy tells The Town Talk illegal dumping, like many issues in the city, can be curtailed somewhat with help from citizens. He urged people who see someone littering or illegally dumping trash to call the police and report the problem.
