Below is the official statement from Matt Cruse, Lafayette Airport Commission chairman, regarding the sudden retirement of longtime Airport Director Greg Roberts:
I'm Matt Cruse and I am the chairman of the Lafayette Airport Commission.
Greg Roberts has retired from his position as director of aviation at Lafayette Regional Airport.
In a letter handed to me yesterday afternoon, Greg indicating that he was retiring, effective immediately, for personal reasons.
An incident at the airport office last Wednesday led to events that culminated in the retirement. When I was informed of the incident on Friday, I appointed a three-member committee of the commission who began to immediately meet with everyone who was in the Wednesday meeting and notified law enforcement in the event they felt an investigation was needed.
On Friday, acting in my capacity as chairman, I placed Greg on administrative leave pending the outcome of our internal investigation. Prior to being able to call a meeting of the full commission to act, Greg met with me on Sunday and provided the letter that announced he was retired.
Deputy Director of Aviation Mike Burrows will act in the interim and the airport will begin a national search for a new director. No airport operations were impacted by the incident and it is business as usual.
We wish Greg the best and are disappointed that what appears to be a momentary lack in judgment has impacted a 21-year career at Lafayette Regional Airport.
