Aerial spraying announced in Iberia Parish

West Nile Virus activity has been detected in mosquito samples submitted by the Iberia Parish Mosquito Control District. The Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory reported 4 of 93 mosquito pools positive for WNV activity in Iberia Parish. These indicators comprise 3 different locations in the Parish --- Coteau, Jeanerette and West End Park.

Ground spraying operations have already begun in these locations and repeat applications will continue this week supplemented with aerial applications. The Iberia Parish Mosquito Control District is urging citizens to protect themselves against mosquito bites and mosquito borne diseases. It is imperative that citizens keep insect repellent handy, wear light colored clothing with long sleeves and long pants when outdoors and get rid of mosquito breeding sites near the home.

The Iberia Parish Mosquito Abatement District will conduct aerial operations to address WNV activity as well as other mosquito populations within the Parish. Operations will be Tuesday (8/27), Wednesday (8/28) and Thursday (8/29) nights only if weather conditions are favorable. Operations will begin each night thirty (30) minutes prior to sunset and last approximately two and one half (2.5) hours.

During this period, only hypersensitive individuals or persons that wish to avoid all exposure to chemicals in the designated spray area should refrain from outdoor activities; otherwise all other citizens can proceed with normal outdoor activities.

Citizens will notice a low flying aircraft --- If the aircraft is overhead DO NOT look up to stare or attempt to follow the path of the aircraft. The aircraft is traveling quickly and will be out of the area in a brief period.

Operations Tuesday night (Coteau) will encompass areas north to south from the St. Martin Parish line to Norris Branch Canal, east to west from Frenchtown Rd. to Lafayette and Vermillion Parish lines as well as Coteau Rd., Snapper Rd., Rose Ln., East Dale and Boyance Rd.

Specifically, Guy Rd., Suard Rd., Ed Broussard, Big Don and Cajun Dr.

Operations Thursday night (Rynella, Port of Iberia & Lydia) will include all areas West to East from Avery Island Rd., Migues, the Port of Iberia to Weeks Island Rd. --- South of Highway 90 and just North of Avery and Weeks Islands --- as well as Pesson, Lydia, Boudreaux, Bayou Jack, Weeks Canal, Collins Rd., Ahab Dr. and R.
