Actor testifies for Calif. paternity-rights bill

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - "The Lost Boys" actor Jason Patric is asking California lawmakers to pass a bill that could allow him another chance to seek paternity rights for his 3-year-old son.

Patric told an Assembly committee Tuesday about what he says is a loophole in state law that deemed him a sperm donor - rather than a parent - during a custody dispute.

Patric and ex-girlfriend Danielle Schreiber conceived a son through artificial insemination. They disagree on the role Patric was to play in the child's life.

Patric says he went to "great lengths," including surgery, to become a father and that he and Schreiber signed an "intended parent" document.

The bill would allow sperm donors to petition for rights if they can show a certain level of involvement in the child's life.
