HOUMA, La. (AP) - A man has been charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of a 38-year-old woman whose body was found in Thibodaux.
Sunday's Courier reported that 35-year-old Jamie Coleman was arrested around noon Saturday. Authorities say he was an acquaintance of Catina "Tina" Stewart, a mother of a baby boy. Her body was found on the side of a road early Wednesday, and the Lafourche Coroner's Office said she died from multiple gunshot wounds. Police have said they believe Stewart of Gibson was shot where her body was found.
When investigators for the Lafourche Sheriff's Office went to a house in Thibodaux looking for Coleman, they say he ran naked from the back of the home as deputies approached.
Lafourche Sheriff's Sgt. Lesley Hill says when caught, officers found powder cocaine in a plastic bag partially hidden in his body. They found more cocaine inside the back door from where Coleman had been seen running.
Hill would not give further details on how Coleman and Stewart knew each other.
Two of Stewart's cousins, Keeva Nicholls and Elisha Robinson, said the arrest is a relief for the family but opens the door for more questions.
"It's closure. We know who. We still don't know why, why he did it," said Robinson, adding that her cousin was always a loving person. "For someone to have hate like that, it must be something with him, in him."
Both Robinson and Nicholls said they don't know exactly how their cousin knew Coleman.
Coleman was taken to the Lafourche Parish jail, where he remained on $49,000 bond that was set for a charge of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. No bond had been set on the murder charge or a child-support issue, Hill said.
This is the first homicide investigation in Lafourche Parish this year.
