On May 10, 2012, the 22nd annual Louisiana Legends Gala was held in Baton Rouge, La. Acadian Co-founder and CEO, Richard Zuschlag, was honored along with Dr. James Andrews, world-renowned orthopedic surgeon; Mickey Gilley, six-time Academy of Country Music Award winner; Gayle Hatch, US Olympic Weightlifting coach; and Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, United States Ambassador to Liberia.
Zuschlag, a 40 plus year resident of Lafayette, moved to Louisiana from Pennsylvania as an engineer for Westinghouse. In the early 1970's, a federal regulation caused local funeral homes to stop employing their own ambulance vehicles. As a result, Zuschlag took action and co-founded Acadian Ambulance. Acadian Ambulance has been committed to providing the highest level of emergency medical care and transportation possible. Now, Acadian Ambulance has expanded to 6 divisions: Acadian Ambulance Service, Acadian Monitoring Services, Air Med, Executive Aircraft Charter Service, National EMS Academy and Safety Management Systems, and employees over 3600 employees.
"Hard work is one of the core values of our company," said Zuschlag. "It comes naturally and is a byproduct of the Louisiana heritage. We emphasize the importance of reaching out, of giving back, but the Louisiana employees already know how to do that. It's in the heart of our employees and in the heart of every person who calls Louisiana home. I am proud to be a part of this great state, and I will always strive to ensure that, as a company, we offer the absolute best service that we possibly can."
The gala recognizes outstanding citizens of Louisiana who have distinguished themselves in a variety of disciplines while honoring the state.
