A Lafayette Parish community that rallies behind its winning football team is in shock tonight after learning of a deception. School officials say one of the players and his parents have been lying about the athlete's age--
As the buses were leaving Acadiana High on Tuesday-- the town was already buzzing.
Now the Wreckin Rams, who have been on a roll this season, must forfeit their last four winning games.
"The good thing about playoffs is once you get there your wins and losses aren't so much a concern, it's just how you play from that point forward," said Principal Nikke Broussard.
As Broussard explains it was during a routine audit of the football player's records when officials discovered a *third string player* who had transferred from Texas had forged documents about his age: He's 19 years old and district policies forbid anyone over 18 from participating in high school athletics. Ms. Brousard says the goal now is to move the team and the student body forward. A process that will likely be easier since the student in question has withdrawn from the school.
At the time of posting, some things that remain up in the air-- whether the 19 year old young man or his parents will face any criminal charges for falsifying the records.
Meanwhile, the Rams next game is against Breaux Bridge on October 29th.
