Acadia Parish police juror referred to ethics board

An Acadia Parish police juror apparently collected $432.28 for mileage he never drove, and will be referred to the district attorney, state attorney general and Louisiana Board of Ethics.

Juror Alton "Al" Stevenson returned the money after the issue was brought up at a police juror meeting this week, says secretary-treasurer Richard "Dickie" Latiolais.

Stevenson received mileage reimbursement to a convention in Fort Worth, Texas, even though another juror drove him to and from the July convention. At first he refused to return the funds, saying he was entitled to it.

"He was under the understanding that all he had to do was get there and he was entitled to the mileage," Latiolais says. "That's not quite the way it is. I got an opinion from our CPA and auditor and he said you actually have to use your vehicle for juror purposes to expense mileage."

Latiolais says he knows of no other instances of fraudulent reimbursement requests.
