A roadway in Vermilion Parish will be renamed Tuesday to honor a fallen deputy. The Vermilion Parish Police Jury voted in favor of changing the name of Savoy Road to Allen Bares Jr. Drive.
"It's very important. It's a healing thing, and it's a memory thing because he was taken away too soon. And he was a very good man, and we just feel it's important that he's remembered," said Vermilion Parish Police Juror Kevin Sagrera.
Deputy Bares was shot and killed last month while he was off-duty. Four people have been arrested in connection with this death.
Savoy Road will lead drivers to the Vermilion Parish Law Enforcement Center. Deputies will be able to see Bares' name every time they go to work.
"Officers would be going in and out of there, his co-workers, day in and day out. It would be a good memorial to see that when they're going in and out of work. His memory would live on in that way," Sagrera said.
"It's been very hard. However, we respect the decision Allen made. He died in the line of duty, trying to stop criminals from hurting other people," said Vermilion Sheriff Mike Couvillon.
State Police said they are still investigating the case, and more arrests are possible.
There will be a formal dedication ceremony on the roadway Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.
