KENNER, La. (AP) - A nine-year-old boy has drowned at Kenner's Driftwood Country Club pool that had been closed because of the rain.
Kenner police say the boy and a friend climbed over a 20-foot cast-iron and brick gate at the private club Monday onto a roof of a small building, from which they jumped into the pool. At some point, the victim went under water and never resurfaced. Police say the other child climbed back over the fence to get help.
Police responded around 4 p.m. The child, whose name was not released, was rushed to an area hospital, but was pronounced dead about 4:30 p.m.
It's unclear how long the boy was under water or whether an injury caused the drowning. An autopsy has been scheduled.
