LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for using a samurai sword to kill a dog.

Aaron Simoneaux, of Olla, pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to an animal. He was sentenced Wednesday in Lake Charles.

A public defender said Simoneaux had an irrational fear of dogs and killed an acquaintance's chow last New Year's Eve because he had been attacked at age 13 by another chow. But a prosecutor said Simoneaux "carved up" the dog in an unprovoked attack.

State District Judge Kent Savoie recommended Simoneaux for an 18-month prison boot camp program that could result in an early parole.
