5 Adults and 2 Juveniles Accused of Copper Theft

Police say five adults and two juveniles have been arrested for copper theft.

On March 27, 2013 at 1:58 am the Eunice Police Department responded to a tip that the Dresser building on Samuel Drive in Eunice had someone on the property. Officers searched the premises with the assistance of the Eunice Fire Department who responded with ladders. Officers were on scene for nearly 2 hours and recovered tools that were left, but no one was located.

At 6:10 am on the same day EPD received a call stating that loud banging noises were coming from a residence near East Vine and Mallet Streets. According to police, the caller stated that the loud noises started around 4:30 am and was still going on. Officers responded to the area and heard the noise coming from 201 N Mallet Street. Police say officers then went to the windows and observed several individuals using tools to dismantle air conditioner coils. Officers knocked and yelled for the individuals to open the door. Police say all of the individuals dropped the tools and attempted to hide. Officers made entry into the residence and located 5 adults and 2 juveniles ages 16 and 13. All 7 were detained and transported to Eunice PD for questioning.

Police say the individuals were on the premises of 201 N. Mallet without permission. According to authorities, Samantha Barnwell used to live at the house, but was evicted and was supposed to vacate the premises by March 25, 2013, but returned. Officers learned that Samantha drove Ryan Courville and Jeffery Barnwell Sr. to the Dresser building to steal copper from the air conditioning units on the rooftop. After the pair stole the items, Samantha returned to pick them up along with the stolen items stated authorities. Samantha then drove to 201 N Mallet Street where Jeffery Barnwell Jr and Jacob Courville were allegedly waiting to help unload the items. All individuals then started to dismantle the copper at 4:30 am, which disturbed the neighbors.

Each of the 5 adults were booked on felony theft charges and additional charges were added after the investigation was completed. Both juveniles were released into the care of other individuals. All 5 adults appeared before 27th Judicial District Judge Alonzo Harris Monday morning.
