4 Independence High students arrested

INDEPENDENCE, La. (AP) - Four Independence High School students have been arrested after a campus-wide search uncovered prescription pills and an unloaded handgun.

Assistant Superintendent Lionel Jackson tells The Daily Star a school resource officer suspected students were smoking marijuana on campus early Tuesday.

Officers with the Independence Police Department, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office and state police went to the school, and Principal Hugh Wallace called for a campus-wide search due to the large presence of police and the discovery of a handgun.

Superintendent Mark Kolwe said students remained in lockdown for two to three hours until K-9 and officers completed the search.

Authorities did not release any information on the students arrested.
