Jayla Broussard was admitted to Abbeville General Hospital about a week ago with major injuries. Only three months old, the infant had suffered a broken wrist, fractured ribs and a fractured skull. Her biological father, Larry Levier, says she was under the care of her mother and her fiancee at the time of the incident. After being treated in Abbeville, she was sent to Women's and Children's Hospital in Lafayette. Abbeville Police say that's where doctors became suspicious.
"Well the initial call came from Women's and Children's Hospital because of inconsistencies within the statements of the fiancee and the mother," Lt. David Hardy of the Abbeville Police Department said.
Jayla's father was told by doctors his daughter also had internal bleeding and suffered four blows to the head. He says he was told by the mother the baby fell out of a bed; and was also told she was at work when the incident happened. Her fiancee said they were together.
"Right now it's ruled as a homicide by blunt force trauma. We're investigating. We're interviewing, the mother, caretakers, other family members," Hardy said.
Jayla was transported again to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. She was pronounced brain dead last Tuesday and died Wednesday night. Police say they hope to make an arrest soon pending the outcome of the investigation.
