NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A new study says tourists and business travelers spent a record $6 billion in New Orleans last year, and the number of visitors was the highest since Hurricane Katrina and the second-highest ever.

The UNO Hospitality Research Center says the city had just over 9 million visitors. That's up nearly a quarter-million from last year and the highest since 2004, when 10.1 million visitors spent $4.8 billion in the city.

The New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau and New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp. released results of the study Tuesday.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says in a news release that he feels confident the numbers will keep growing, with a goal of welcoming 13 million visitors by 2018.
