"It was a big surprise, we didn't think it would come that soon."
That surprise is baby Jaylen Bernard...he came as the first baby of 2011 in Lafayette Parish at 5:15am. Parents Jerome Bruno, and Dewayna Bernard were not expecting him till later in the week.
"My due date wasn't till the 11th, so it was a big surprise."
Not only was it a surprise for baby Jaylen's parents, but also for Sean and Angelle Renard as they welcomed baby Griffin into the world. Griffin was the first baby born at Lafayette General for 2011.
"It was surprising...we didn't think that was going to happen. Not at all especially since he was born at 8:49 am"
These families have more than a new years baby in common, both families also have a son around two years old that they say is thrilled to become an older brother.
"He is as excited as any two year old could be...he just knew he was having a brother coming and didn't know when."
And as for baby Jaylen's brother, his parents say..."He's a momma's boy....he sees me with the new baby and he did good earlier, but this morning he was like oh momma crying and stuff. I hope it all wears off and he'll be ok."
KATC did make a few calls to track down the first baby born in Acadiana. Baby Bentely Cusigue was born at Iberia Medical Center in New Iberia at 12:07 AM. The family declined to talk on camera.
