2009-2010 OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS PROJECT AWARD RECIPIENTS

LAFAYETTE, LA-SEPTEMBER 3, 2009 - The Junior League of Lafayette is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2009-2010 Opportunity Knocks Project Participation. Over twenty 501(c)(3) organizations applied for participation in the Opportunity Knocks Community Service Program, which offers non-profit agencies and organizations volunteers and funding for short-term (approximately ½ day) projects. The implementation of these projects is available as a result of the overwhelming community support of the Junior League of Lafayette fundraisers (Tinsel & Treasures Holiday Market and sales from its four cookbooks) and the hard work of the Junior League of Lafayette membership.

The Junior League of Lafayette's 2009-2010 Opportunity Knocks Project Participation recipients are the following:

· September 2009 - Goodwill Industries of Acadiana "Goodwill Gardens" -The project aligns JLL members to construct a garden at the Good Home to offer its residents a place for reflection, positive thoughts, and interaction while enjoying the peace and beauty of the outdoors.
· October 2009 - Families Helping Families of Acadiana "Treats at the Village" - This project provides a safe and inclusive place for individuals with disabilities and their families to trick or treat, hosted by JLL members.
· October 2009 - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana "Frightfully Fun" Halloween Party - A Halloween Party hosted by JLL members for the children and their adult volunteers matched in mentoring relationships through the BBBS programs, as well as those on the waiting list.
· November 2009 - United Way "Dolly Parton Imagination Library" - JLL members to register children to obtain age-appropriate books in their homes.
· December 2009 - The American Cancer Society's Boutique "Look Good, Feel Better Boutique" - JLL members to design and create a tranquil space for cancer patients to get fitted for head wear including wigs, hair pieces, turbans, hats, head scarves, kerchiefs, and other useful products.
· January 2010 - Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC) "Day of Design" - JLL members to provide a day of beauty with LARC residents making necklaces.
· February 2010 - Lafayette Young Lawyer's Association "High School Mock Trial Competition" - JLL members assist in creating a mock trial for high school students in an effort to increase the students' abilities to speak in public, use critical thinking skills, and debate hot topics.
· March 2010 - New Life Center "Housekeeping Start-Up Kit Project" - JLL members assist in providing tools necessary to maintain a clean living area to women residing in a shelter.
· April 2010 - Lafayette Council on Aging "Acadiana District Senior Olympics Games" - JLL members attend the Senior Olympics and facilitate Wii games with seniors.
· April 2010 - Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf "Girl's Sports Day" - JLL members to assist in facilitating sports games to promote health and wellness to girls ages K to 12 in the Acadiana area.
