NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The philosophy and history departments at the University of New Orleans will split a $3.9 million gift from an alumnus who earned a degree in each field.
University President Peter Fos says the gift, from businessman Carl Muckley Sr., will establish an endowed scholarship fund to honor his mentors in each department.
The Times-Picayune reports the philosophy department gift will establish the Donald K. Hanks Endowed Scholarship Fund in Philosophy, providing perpetual funding for a scholarship Mulkey set up in 1988. The gift to the history department honors Joseph Logsdon and will provide money for an undergraduate scholarship Mulkey set up in Logsdon's name.
Mulkey earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1975 and, eight years later, he earned a master's degree in history.
