RICHWOOD, La. (AP) Richwood police have arrested two people suspected of mistreating animals.

The News-Star reports that 22-year-old Darrel Stevenson and 24-year-old Courtney Profit, both of Monroe, were booked into Ouachita Correctional Center Saturday for cruelty to animals and simple criminal damage to property. Profit was also booked on three warrants with Monroe police.

According to arrest affidavits, Stevenson told police he abandoned a 2-month-old pitbull in late March. Police said the puppy was locked in a small closet with no food or water.

Stevenson's bond was set at $15,500. Profit had bonded out Sunday night.

It was not immediately known whether Stevenson and Profit have attorneys.
