MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Two residents have admitted filing false claims so they could receive money meant for people harmed by last year's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Pamela Washington and Robert Brown pleaded guilty last week to conspiracy to commit fraud. The Mobile Press-Register (http://bit.ly/q5Rrf6 ) reports that prosecutors will recommend minimal sentences under federal guidelines.

Authorities say both defendants paid a Mobile-area woman, Gladys Douglas, to file bogus claims on their behalf to the Gulf Coat Claims Facility, which compensates people who lost money after an offshore oil rig exploded in April 2010. It triggered an oil leak that spilled some 200 million gallons of crude into the sea.

Douglas and two others also face charges in the case.
