NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Sixteen fishermen have graduated from a pilot project to teach them skills to help them get jobs outside their usual line of work.

The pilot was supported by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, a philanthropic organization; the nonprofit Coastal Communities Consulting and Delgado Community College.

After the BP PLC oil spill in 2010, the groups decided to help fishermen get skills that could help them get maritime jobs other than fishing.

On Monday, the groups announced that the fishermen had obtained Coast Guard certifications after training in water survival, first-aid, maritime security, oil spill cleanup, firefighting and other areas.

The fishermen were trained at the Delgado Maritime, Fire, Radar and Industrial Training Facility.
