16 candidates for Lafayette Parish School Board

Qualifying is underway for the November election, and already there are 16 people in the running for seats on the Lafayette Parish School Board. Anyone seeking a position has until 4:30 p.m. Friday to filing their qualifying papers.

Current board members Mark Babineaux, Greg Awbrey and Rae Trahan said they are not running for re-election. Babineaux is instead running for 15th district judge. The other six members have qualified to run.

There are nine positions in total to fill. In two districts, only one person has qualified to run. Those include Districts 1 candidate Mary Morrison and District 8 candidate Hunter Beasley. That means, if no else qualifies, these candidates will be school board members in November.

Elsewhere, the races are already taking shape. Districts 2,3,4,5,6,7 and 9 have multiple candidates running.
