Baton Rouge-Attorney General Buddy Caldwell will once again be part of a coordinated national education campaign that encourages consumers to take full advantage of their consumer rights and make better-informed decisions. State, federal, and local consumer protection agencies and consumer advocacy organizations will celebrate the 15th Annual National Consumer Protection Week, March 3-9, 2013.
"Scams and fraud occur every day so it's important to equip consumers with resources to protect their privacy, manage money and debt, avoid identity theft, and steer clear of swindlers," said Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.
In honor of National Consumer Protection Week, the Louisiana Attorney General's Office will host a consumer protection workshop on Thursday, March 7 for consumer protection advocates.
"The workshop will provide representatives from state agencies and consumer protection organizations with the latest information on consumer scams and fraud prevention resources," Caldwell said.
The National Association of Attorneys General is one of the participating organizations for National Consumer Protection Week. Attorneys General are a leading consumer protection force in the nation. Most have primary responsibility for the enforcement of state consumer protection statutes. Attorneys General oversee their consumer protection units and develop enforcement strategies.
The Louisiana Attorney General's Office reminds consumers of these tips:

· Avoid high-pressure sales tactics.
· Ask questions and do your homework.
· Ignore "once in a lifetime" offers.
· Avoid giving out your personal information over the phone.
· Investigate offers made to you as a contest winner, especially if you are asked to send money in order to collect your prize.
· Never wire money to people you do not know.
